Seeing Red

While the previous post (highlight film) celebrated the many successes of the 1979 season, the club's financial reality was far more bleak. The Diplomats were suffering not only from being in the same league as the Cosmos, but being in the same division as well.

According to a company VP, the desire of the Dips parent company, Gulf & Western, was to have an "elegant Latin flavor." However, when the season started five months later, there was only one Latino on the roster. Whatever flavor he added was substantially diluted.
