40th Anniversary of Black Sunday on Monday, June 1

Monday, June 1, marks the 40th anniversary of Black Sunday, when Referee Toros Kibritjian conspired with Linesman Gordon Arrowsmith to rob the Diplomats of a nationally televised win over the Cosmos by taking 2 goals away from the Dips.

The crowd of 50,000 plus had settled comfortably into their seats, unaware of Kibritjain's and Arrowsmith's treachery.

The Dips Alan Green,who had a goal disallowed, spent most of the day being roughed up by the Cosmos.

Chinaglia smiles, knowing the outcome of the match has already been determined.
